No Liturgy ─ no New Testament reading appointed

“In the multitude of words sin cannot be avoided” [Prov. 10:19]. Attentive Christians call their senses “windows of the soul”: if they are opened, all warmth will go away from the soul like from a room in winter.   But the biggest opening, a wide door ajar which is letting warmth out is our tongue when it is allowed to speak without restraint. 

Much the same way as all our senses taken together, idle talk is harmful to our attention and inner harmony: the words which we utter involve the objects of all senses and make the same impact on the soul as actual seeing, hearing or feeling would.  Idle talk on the outside is like daydreaming inside ─ only idle talk is even worse, because it is more material and has a deeper impression upon the soul.  Moreover, it is closely connected with bloated self-esteem, impudence and disobedience ─ forces which wreck our inner harmony like a hurricane, leaving behind insensitivity and blindness.  No wonder that we cannot avoid sin in the multitude of words!
