Holy Wednesday
Mt. 26:6-16

The Lord is silent on Wednesday, all the way until Friday matins when we will hear Him pouring out His word before the disciples [Jn., ch.14-17], a word similar to nothing written before, not only in the human but also in the divine scriptures. But today the Church ordained that we only hear how He asked not to hinder a woman anointing Him with fragrant myrrh, for that served Him as preparation for death [Mt. 26:10-13].

There is just one thing presently before His eyes ─ His death, the concluding mystery of His earthly sojourn which He undertook unto our salvation. Let us also concentrate our minds on His death; let us find a good hope for the salvation of our souls in that great mystery ─ as our souls are burdened with numerous sins, unable to find peace in the crossfire of our awakened conscience and awareness of God’s justice.

I sincerely thank all of you for praying for me. I know that this prayer is daily, the whole Church prays, and, probably, without this prayer it would be impossible to carry out the Patriarchal ministry. But when they pray for me on this day, a personal day, with which the very appearance of a person in life is connected, then, I think, this prayer is heard by the Lord, and help is poured out on the one for whom they pray. And through those present here, I thank all of you now, my dear bishops, fathers, brothers and sisters, who today, all over the face of our earth, in all the fullness of our Church, have been offering up prayers for the Patriarch.
