According to St. Peter, baptism is a promise of a good conscience to God [1Peter 3:21].   In baptism we give a vow to live the rest of our lives in clear conscience, based upon the entire scope of Lord’s commandments.

The hallmark of baptism is moral purity.  St. Paul compares the brightness of Christian life with that of the Risen Lord: “Like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life” [Rom. 6:4].  The old sinful man dies in baptism, and a new man appears, a seeker of goodness.  “Likewise reckon ye ─ Christians ─ also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.  Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.  For sin shall not have dominion over you” [Rom. 6:11-14].
