Saint Eustathius, Archbishop of Serbia, lived in the second half of the 13th century, during the reign of King Stefan Uros II Milutin of Serbia, who ruled Serbia from 1262 to 1320.
He was born in the Budimila region in a pious Christian family, where he received a spiritual upbringing. Distinguished by his extraordinary abilities, young Evstafy was sent by his parents to study "book wisdom." He studied the Holy Scriptures especially diligently, perfecting himself in piety and virtue.
He took tonsure and monastic orders at the monastery of Archangel Michael, which is located in the Zetskaya region of Montenegro. He led a strict ascetic life. From his allotted monastic share in food and clothing, he favored the poor.
From there, he traveled to Jerusalem to worship the Holy Sepulchre. On the way back, he visited the Holy Mount Athos and settled there in the Serbian monastery of the Most Holy Theotokos of Hilandar, built by Saint Simeon, the world–famous Serbian Zhupan Stefan Nemanja, and his son Saint Sava..
Saint Eustathius gained universal fame and love as a strict ascetic and kind teacher and was elevated to the rank of abbot of the monastery.
A few years later, he was ordained bishop of the Diocese of Zeta. It was then that the saint returned to his homeland. His rich spiritual experience and monastic life earned him the love of his compatriots, and Saint Eustathius was elected to the throne of the Archbishops of Serbia, the successors of Saint Sava. Saint Eustathius ruled the Serbian Church for seven years and died peacefully around 1285. His body was buried in the monastery of Zhidoch, later it was moved to Pesci (Pec) and laid in the Cathedral of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul.
