The Holy Martyr Vadim Archimandrite was born in the IV century in the Persian city of Bethlapate, came from a rich and noble family. In his younger years, he was enlightened by Christian teaching. The saint distributed part of the estate and went into the desert, where he founded a monastery at his own expense. For solitary prayer, he went to the mountain and one day was honored to see the Glory of God. At that time, the Persian king Sapor (310 - 381) began to persecute Christians. Saint Vadim was taken along with seven disciples and tortured daily in prison, trying to get them to renounce Christ and worship the sun and fire. But Venerable Vadim and his disciples firmly adhered to the Christian faith. The confessors spent four months in prison. All this time, Saint Vadim was the spiritual leader and support for Christians living in Persia.
One of the confidants of King Sapor, Nirsan, who professed Christianity and even suffered imprisonment for this, could not stand the test and renounced Christ. He promised to fulfill any command of the king. Sapor demanded from Nirsan that he personally cut off the head of Saint Vadim. For this, he promised him forgiveness and a reward. Nirsan could not overcome the fear of new torments and agreed to step on the treacherous path of Judas. When Saint Vadim was brought to him, he took a sword and went to him, but, rebuked by conscience, Nirsan suddenly trembled and seemed to turn to stone. Saint Vadim said to him: "Has your malice, Nirsan, reached the point that you not only renounced God, but also begin to kill His slaves? Woe to you, damned one, what will you do on the day when you appear at the Last Judgment to give an answer to God?! I will gladly die in agony for Christ, but I would not like to accept death by your hand." Embittered, Nirsan struck with his sword. But his hands were shaking, and he could not immediately cut off the head of the saint, so the fire worshippers began to call him a coward. Venerable Martyr Vadim stood motionless, enduring terrible blows, until the murderer finally managed to cut off his head (+ 376). The retribution for renunciation did not slow to befall the unfortunate man: tormented by conscience, he committed suicide by throwing himself on the sword. After the death of Tsar Sapor, 7 disciples of the Monk Martyr Vadim came out of prison.
