Metropolitan Daniil of Vidin was elected as the new Primate of the Bulgarian Church. His enthronement took place on June 30 at the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia. Representatives from Local Orthodox Churches, Bulgarian state officials, and numerous faithful attended the ceremony. The Russian Church was represented by the Exarch of Western Europe, Metropolitan Nestor. Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia sent his congratulations to the newly elected Bulgarian Patriarch.
30th Anniversary of the Glorification of St. John of Shanghai
The 30th anniversary of the glorification of St. John of Shanghai was prayerfully commemorated in San Francisco and Moscow. On June 29, the First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (ROCOR) led the Divine Liturgy at the Cathedral of the Icon of the Mother of God "Joy of All Who Sorrow" in San Francisco. The diocese also organized a gathering of altar servers who had assisted Archbishop John during his tenure as head of the San Francisco Diocese from 1962 to 1965. St. John was buried in the crypt of the cathedral he built. In 1994, a special commission found his relics incorrupt, leading to his canonization first by ROCOR and later by the entire Russian Orthodox Church.
Canonization of Stepanida Bitolskaya
On June 30, the heads of the Serbian and Macedonian Churches celebrated the liturgy of glorification for the new saint, Stepanida Bitolskaya. The service at St. Demetrius Church in Bitola was attended by representatives of various Orthodox Churches, as well as clergy from Bulgaria, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. The decision to canonize Stepanida Bitolskaya was made by the Holy Synod of the Macedonian Orthodox Church - Ohrid Archbishopric in April 2024.
Support for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Tbilisi
A rally in support of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which is facing persecution, was held in Tbilisi. Several dozen clergy and parishioners expressed solidarity with Orthodox believers in Ukraine. Participants brought portraits of repressed priests and posters. The organizers compared the persecution of Ukrainian believers to the events in Georgia in the 1920s and 1930s and expressed dissatisfaction with the European Union's response to the situation.
Celebration of St. Naum of Ohrid in Macedonia
On July 2, Macedonia celebrated the feast day of St. Naum of Ohrid, a prominent figure in Slavic enlightenment and one of the seven disciples of Saints Cyril and Methodius. He is especially venerated in Macedonia and Bulgaria. The celebrations included the participation of Bishop Tikhon of Tiveriopolis from the Bulgarian Church. The main festivities were held at the Monastery of St. Naum in Ohrid and at the Church of St. Naum in Delčevo.
Visit of Indian Medical Delegation to Russia
A delegation of doctors from St. Gregory's Hospital in Parumala, overseen by the Malankara Orthodox Church of India, visited Russia. The delegation familiarized themselves with church social projects in Moscow, visited a church relief center for refugees, and a center for helping the homeless. Additionally, the Indian doctors toured monasteries and a mobile hospital in Pereslavl-Zalessky.
