On January 31, 2025, the Patriarchs of Syria sent a joint congratulatory message to the President of the Syrian Arab Republic, Ahmad Al-Shar, on his assumption of office. In the letter, the heads of the Church of Antioch, the Syriac Orthodox and the Melkite Greek Catholic Churches expressed hope for a new era for the country based on security, freedom and dignity for every citizen.
Patriarchs John X, Ignatius Afrem II and Joseph Absi in their message pray for the new president to be given wisdom and strength in governing the country at this critical moment. In particular, they stressed the importance of the transition phase that Syria is going through, and expressed confidence that with God's help, the country will be able to pass this period for the benefit of the entire people.
The Patriarchs noted the enormous suffering endured by the Syrian people in all communities, expressing the hope that a new era of security, freedom and dignity is dawning for every Syrian citizen.
"Today we stand on the threshold of a new history, the defining features of which are the security, freedom and dignity of every Syrian. Sharing the joy of Syria's new dawn, we express our solidarity and support, promising to work hand in hand with all our compatriots to rebuild the nation and its constitutional institutions," the letter says.
In conclusion, the Patriarchs called for preserving this new stage in the history of Syria as a valuable legacy, confirming that the Churches will support stability and progress in the country.
