On October 1, 2024, a ceremonial tree-planting event took place in the courtyard of the Holy Trinity Cathedral (Sameba) in Tbilisi, organized under the blessing of the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Ilia II. Georgian Olympic and Paralympic champions and medalists participated in the event, with each athlete planting an olive tree named in their honor. The event was blessed by the cathedral's abbot, Archimandrite Ilia (Nasidze), who wished the athletes continued success.
The Georgian Patriarchate's press service reported that the event was supported by the Green Georgia Foundation and the Patriarchal College of Decorative Horticulture. The head of the college, Abbess Tekle (Sikharulidze), also joined the athletes in planting the trees.
The Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi is the largest Orthodox church in Georgia. Built on Mount Elia in Avlabari between 1995 and 2004, it was designed by architect Archil Mindiashvili. The cathedral has become a symbol of the revival of the Georgian Church and was consecrated by Patriarch Ilia II on November 23, 2004.
The idea for the cathedral’s construction emerged in 1989, in celebration of the 1500th anniversary of the autocephaly of the Georgian Orthodox Church and the 2000th anniversary of the birth of Christ. Although a design was selected through a competition, the political crisis in Georgia delayed construction, and the foundation was only laid in 1995. The building was primarily funded by private donations.
