On February 27, the commission will begin work on taking into account cultural values that are located in the Nearby Caves of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC). This was reported on Sunday by the Union of Orthodox Journalists (SPJ).
"The head of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra Reserve, Maxim Ostapenko, in a letter to the monastery, stated that from February 27, a commission will begin work on the "return of cultural values in order to register them," which "are actually located in Nearby caves." This was announced by the lawyer of the Lavra, Archpriest Nikita Chekman, in his telegram channel," reads the message published on the website of the SPJ.
The archpriest said that the monastery received such a letter after refusing to facilitate the "divine service" of the OCU in the Nearby Caves on February 24, 2024, in which "Archbishop Agapit of Vyshgorodsky" from the OCU was supposed to take part.
Also, the clergy of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) stated that the fulfillment of Maxim Ostapenko's demands is impossible, since the UOC and the schismatic Orthodox Church of Ukraine (PCU) are not in Eucharistic unity, and repairs are being carried out in the caves, which the monks perform at the request of the reserve itself.
