On January 15, 2025, Patriarch John X of Antioch and All the East arrived in Lebanon and met with the country’s newly elected President, Joseph Aoun. The Patriarch extended his congratulations and blessings, expressing hope for the nation’s revival, according to vdlnews.com. “We pray for Lebanon to become a symbol of peace, dignity, and unity for the entire region,” Patriarch John remarked.

The head of the Antiochian Orthodox Church emphasized the importance of preserving the Christian presence in the Middle East and stressed the need to encourage Lebanese emigrants to return while strengthening the country’s social and economic institutions.

President Aoun thanked the Patriarch for his support and acknowledged the significant challenges facing the nation, including the ongoing economic crisis, the aftermath of the Beirut port explosion, and Israeli aggressions. He stated: “Our efforts must focus on rebuilding Lebanon and ensuring peace, security, and dignity for its citizens. Regardless of religion or background, we all share a single identity—Lebanese.”

Lebanon’s Parliament elected Joseph Aoun as President on January 9, 2025, ending a two-year presidential vacuum. Previously serving as Commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces since 2017, Aoun has been instrumental in combating extremist groups, stabilizing border areas, and maintaining internal order.

As per Lebanon’s Constitution, the President must be a Maronite Christian and is elected by Parliament. This week, Lebanon also hosted Maronite Patriarch Bechara Boutros al-Rahi and Melkite Catholic Patriarch Youssef Absi. They congratulated the new President and pledged support for national unity and efforts to rebuild Lebanon. The religious leaders underscored the crucial role of the Christian community in preserving the nation’s interfaith balance and cultural diversity.
