In a heartfelt message following the election of Pope Leo XIV, Patriarch Theophilos I of Jerusalem expressed his congratulations and his confidence in the newly elected pontiff's pivotal role in promoting peace and supporting Christians in the Holy Land. In his address, the Patriarch emphasized the importance of Pope Leo’s words after his election, which highlighted the urgent need for dialogue, bridge-building, and encounters as essential steps towards peace in a world increasingly torn by division and violence.

"We eagerly anticipate the meaningful participation of Pope Leo in this urgent mission, to which we, as the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, along with other Church leaders of the Holy Land, have long been dedicated," said Patriarch Theophilos. He expressed his hope that the new pontiff would continue the legacy of his predecessors in supporting the Christian presence in the region, especially in light of the growing challenges and pressures faced by the Christian communities.

Patriarch Theophilos also extended a warm invitation to Pope Leo XIV, welcoming him as a pilgrim to the Holy Land, following the tradition established by previous papal visits. He noted that an essential aspect of the dialogue between the Orthodox and Catholic Churches is the continuation of theological discussions, which are vital for fostering unity and understanding on the international stage.

Earlier, in his first public remarks, Pope Leo XIV also underscored the importance of peace and cooperation. The new pontiff called for the cessation of all wars, emphasizing the need to abandon the "paradigm of war" and combat aggression, particularly in communication. He also stressed that peace cannot be achieved without mutual respect and the rejection of ideologies that promote violence and hatred.

As tensions continue to rise in the Middle East, the call for unity and peace from both the Jerusalem Patriarchate and the papacy represents a hopeful step toward strengthening ties between Christian communities and working together for a more peaceful and harmonious region.
