The third National Congress on Active Ageing opened on 17 November 2025 at the Palace of Parliament in Bucharest, bringing together specialists, policymakers, and representatives of public institutions. The Romanian Orthodox Church is taking an active role in the event.

Patriarchal adviser Fr. Ciprian Ionita delivered a message from Patriarch Daniel of Romania to the participants. In his address, the Patriarch emphasized that an active and dignified old age is “a crown gained by those who walk the path of piety,” and that intergenerational bonds are essential for the harmonious development of society.

Patriarch Daniel underscored the spiritual value of old age, which Scripture describes as a “glorious crown” (Proverbs 16:31) and “knowledge of many things” (Sirach 25:9). “The Church’s teaching calls for the preservation of intergenerational ties and inspires joy in life as a gift from God, made manifest through active participation in society, in the family, the community, and the Church,” His Beatitude noted.

He reminded participants that in an age marked by individualism, the Church offers practical ways to foster the social inclusion of older people: participation in liturgical life, pilgrimages, charitable projects, pastoral visits, and various educational and cultural initiatives. Such efforts, he said, help maintain spiritual balance and strengthen communal relationships.

Several Church-affiliated initiatives are being highlighted at the Congress. The Romanian Patriarchate’s Charity Federation project, “Help an Elderly Person Smile,” has been named one of the recipients of the “Active Longevity” award.

Forum participants are also discussing the demographic challenges of an ageing population and long-term care models. According to organizers, by 2035 nearly one-third of Romania’s population will be over the age of 65, a shift that will require expanded social and community support.
