Porfirije, the head of the Serbian Orthodox Church, led solemn Easter services at the historic Peć Patriarchate, one of the church’s most important spiritual centers, located in Kosovo.

The праздничная литургия (festive liturgy) took place at the centuries-old monastery complex, founded in the 13th century and long regarded as a symbol of the spiritual and historical continuity of the Serbian people. The Peć Patriarchate has played a central role in shaping the religious life of the nation for generations.

Patriarch Porfirije was joined by clergy and monastic representatives during the service, which was attended by a large number of faithful from across Kosovo and Metohija, according to the Serbian Church’s official website.

In his Easter sermon, Porfirije urged believers to embrace joy and overcome fear. He emphasized the meaning of the traditional greeting “Christ is risen,” describing it as a message that reveals the purpose of human life.

“The Lord calls on us not to be afraid, despite the deep-rooted fear of death present in every human being,” he said.

The Patriarch noted that throughout history, humanity has sought answers to the problem of death through science, philosophy, and other fields, but said that true liberation from fear is found through faith. He reaffirmed the Christian teaching that Christ has conquered death, offering believers the promise of new life.

Porfirije also called for love and compassion toward all people, regardless of differences. “The Lord grants life to everyone — both the righteous and the sinner,” he added.

Following the service, the Patriarch met with worshippers, and a festive meal was held at the monastery. According to the Church’s press office, he is scheduled to visit the Visoki Dečani Monastery on Holy Monday, another major religious site in the region.
