Russian President Vladimir Putin has awarded the Order of Friendship to His Holiness Catholicos of the East Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, the primate of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, for his significant contributions to fostering friendship and cooperation between Russia and India. This decree was published on the official legal information portal.

The document states: "For a substantial contribution to the development of spiritual connections, strengthening friendship, and cooperation between Russia and India, award the Order of Friendship to Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, primate of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, Catholicos of the East."

Earlier, in April this year, His Holiness Catholicos Baselios Marthoma Mathews III was awarded the Order of Glory and Honor (First Class) for his contributions to developing friendly relations between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, and in recognition of his 75th birthday, as reported on the website of the Moscow Patriarchate's Department for External Church Relations.

The Malankara Church traces its origins to the 1st century and regards the Apostle Thomas as its founder. It is one of the six ancient Oriental Orthodox Churches that recognize only the first three Ecumenical Councils up to the Council of Chalcedon, hence they are also known as "pre-Chalcedonian churches."

The relationship between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Malankara Church of India has a long history, dating back to the 19th century. Over the years, they have engaged in theological consultations, academic cooperation, and collaboration on international Christian platforms. Both churches have significantly contributed to strengthening the friendship and mutual understanding between the peoples of Russia and India.

A new impetus to bilateral relations was given in 2019 when, with the blessings of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia and His Holiness Catholicos Baselios Marthoma Paulose II, a Working Group was established to coordinate relations between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Malankara Church.
