On October 2, 2024, the executive secretary of the Synodal Department for Church Charity and Social Service, Hegumen Serafim (Kravchenko), met with the rector of the parish of the Mat Maryam Temple, the representative of the Assyrian Church of the East in Russia, Archbishop Samano Odisho, at the Moscow Mat Maryam Temple.
During the meeting, the representative of the Assyrian Church of the East handed over humanitarian aid to the victims in the conflict zone — blankets, pillows, bed linen and winter clothes. Only about 300 kilograms. The parishioners of the Mat Maryam Temple also took part in the transfer of humanitarian cargo. The aid was purchased with funds raised by members of the Assyrian parish. The cargo will be distributed among the affected civilians of Kursk, Zaporizhia and Kherson regions, Lugansk and Donetsk Republics.
Abbot Serafim (Kravchenko) noted that all humanitarian aid distributed through the Russian Orthodox Church is targeted and regardless of age, gender, religious beliefs or political views: the main criterion is to extend a helping hand to those who need it.
Archbishop Samano Odisho spoke about the social work of the parish he heads and his intention to continue collecting humanitarian aid for victims in the conflict zone.
The Russian Orthodox Church has been helping the victims since the first days of the armed conflict. In Russia, the Church has collected, purchased and transferred more than 3,820 tons of humanitarian aid to refugees and injured civilians. More than 2,500 volunteers traveled to the war zone to care for hospital patients and provide social assistance to the victims. Church aid centers have been organized in Kursk, Belgorod, Donetsk, Mariupol and other cities, where more than 260 thousand people have already received support.
With the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, the Synodal Department for Charity and the Kursk Diocese are organizing support for victims of shelling in the Kursk region. The Church is sending humanitarian aid shipments to Kursk. The hotline of the Synodal Department for Charity 8-800-70-70-222 is working in an enhanced mode — dozens of requests for help are received daily. Church temporary accommodation facilities have been deployed. On August 16, the opening of the church center for comprehensive social assistance took place in Kursk. During this time, more than 38 thousand people have applied to the center for help. The volunteers of the Synodal Department of Charity help to care for the elderly and people with disabilities in temporary accommodation and for the wounded in the hospital of the Kursk region.
