The Resurrection Cathedral in Vologda received a gift of a slipper from St. Spyridon of Trimifunt. A rare Orthodox relic was delivered from the island of Corfu on the Memorial Day of the Vologda Saints, it was personally handed over by the acting governor of the Vologda region Georgy Filimonov, the press service of the head of the region reported.
"On such a significant day, it is very symbolic to donate the embad of St. Spyridon of Trimifunt to the Resurrection Cathedral. This shrine is very significant for us, for Orthodox people and dear to the heart of every Orthodox person. This gift is a testament to the unity of service to our people, our Russia, our Vologda land, both the secular authorities and the clergy," the press service quoted Filimonov as saying.
In honor of the holiday, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated in St. Sophia Cathedral. After that, the solemn glorification of the holy relics of the Venerable Joseph, Anthony and John of Zaonikiev was held and a prayer was made to the Vologda saints. The service was completed by a citywide procession. The solemn procession with the singing of prayers proceeded to the Resurrection Cathedral, where the relics of the Zaonikiev saints were deposited.
The Vologda Saints' Memorial Day opens a series of events that will be dedicated to the celebration of the tenth anniversary of the founding of the Vologda Metropolitanate.
The relics of St. Spyridon, which rest on the island of Corfu in the church consecrated in his honor, are shod in velvet shoes embroidered with gold thread, which, according to Greek tradition, are changed twice a year. The inhabitants of the island of Corfu believe that the saint "walks" on earth, visiting those who need his help, and thus wears out his shoes. The "worn-out" shoes are handed over to Orthodox believers in churches all over the world.
