On November 13, the Dmitrievskaya Church in the village of Kazachya Loknya, Sudzha District, Kursk Region, sustained damage from shelling by Ukrainian Armed Forces, according to regional authorities. The stone church, built in 1880 and dedicated to St. Demetrius of Thessaloniki, suffered structural impacts, with its facade damaged, and windows and doors shattered.
Recently restored after a long period of neglect, this church is designated as a regional cultural heritage site. Closed during the Soviet era, it was repurposed as a storage facility and gradually fell into disrepair until restoration efforts began in the late 20th century. In the 1920s, about three kilograms of church valuables were confiscated from the building.
The Ministry for the Protection of Cultural Heritage has provided details on the church’s damage to the Investigation Department of the Investigative Committee in the Kursk Region.
Since August, Sudzha District has been in an active conflict zone, with a large part of the area occupied and numerous settlements regularly shelled. Recently, another cultural heritage site, the Holy Sign Church ensemble in the village of Borki, was also struck.
