Two priests of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) of the Moscow Patriarchate have returned to Russia, said Tatyana Moskalkova, Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation.
"Priests N. Zakroets and A. Lunegov have also been returned to Russia. I hope that these important humanitarian processes will develop. We continue our dialogue with the Ukrainian Ombudsman on this issue," the Ombudsman wrote on her Telegram channel.
On June 22, at the request of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, Metropolitan Jonathan (Yeletskikh) of Tulchinsky and Bratslav was released in Ukraine. On June 25, the Patriarch received the metropolitan at the patriarchal residence in the Danilov Monastery in Moscow and awarded him the Order of St. Sergius of Radonezh, I degree. According to Moskalkova, she had previously appealed to the Ukrainian Ombudsman regarding Metropolitan Jonathan.
On August 7, 2023, the Vinnytsia City Court sentenced Metropolitan Jonathan to five years in prison with confiscation of property, including under Article 109 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (actions aimed at forcibly changing or overthrowing the constitutional order or seizing state power) and Article 110 of the Criminal Code (encroachment on the territorial integrity of Ukraine).
