On February 17, the Synod of the Orthodox Church in Kazakhstan gathered to focus on the preparations for celebrating the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Astana and Almaty dioceses.

The meeting, led by Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan, took place in a combined in-person and remote format, as reported by mitropolia.kz. Following a collective prayer, the Head of the Orthodox Church in Kazakhstan welcomed the hierarchs with opening remarks and outlined the agenda.

Metropolitan of Kazakhstan shared details about the upcoming celebration of a significant historical event – the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Astana and Almaty dioceses. The head of the Metropolitan District informed the hierarchs about the preparations for church and public festivities dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the blessed repose of Metropolitan Joseph (Chernov) and the 225th anniversary of the birth of the first hierarch of the Turkestan diocese – Archbishop Sophronius (Sokolsky), scheduled for 2025.

In May 2003, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, under the chairmanship of Patriarch Alexy II, decided to establish the Metropolitan District in Kazakhstan. Initially, it included three dioceses – Almaty, Chimkent, and Uralsk. At present, the district comprises ten dioceses. The latest addition, the Aktobe and Kyzylorda Diocese, was formed by the decision of the Holy Synod in 2022.
