On November 4, the Feast of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, a special liturgy took place at St. Nicholas Church in Donetsk. The service was led by the newly appointed Metropolitan Vladimir of Donetsk and Mariupol, alongside Metropolitan Hilarion, who led the Donetsk Diocese for 28 years. Archbishop Varna of Makiivka and Archbishop Varsonofy of Novoazovsk were also present.

Following the service, the two hierarchs exchanged greetings. Metropolitan Hilarion expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the liturgy and wished his successor success in continuing the mission of the Donetsk metropolitans. He spoke of the deep faith of Donetsk residents and hoped that Metropolitan Vladimir would serve them with the same sincere devotion. Concluding his remarks, Metropolitan Hilarion asked for the intercession of the Mother of God and God’s blessing for Metropolitan Vladimir in his new role.

In response, Metropolitan Vladimir expressed his deep appreciation for his predecessor, acknowledging Metropolitan Hilarion’s work in strengthening the Church in Donbas. He noted that under Metropolitan Hilarion's leadership, many churches were restored, allowing Donetsk residents to connect with the spiritual treasures of the Orthodox faith.

On October 24, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church granted Metropolitan Hilarion retirement due to age and health. The former Metropolitan of Vladivostok and Primorye, Vladimir, was appointed in his place. In July 2023, the Donetsk Diocese transferred from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church’s jurisdiction to the Russian Orthodox Church, a decision made by the diocesan clergy.
