On March 18, 2025, the conference "Christian Ethics and Social Justice" was held in a face-to-face and remote format under the chairmanship of Metropolitan Clement of Kaluga and Borovsk. The event was held as part of the work of the Inter-Council Presence Commission on Public Life, Culture, Science and Information.
Before the start of the event, Metropolitan Clement expressed his condolences over the death of Archimandrite Ilia (Nozdrin), whose funeral service was performed on that day by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia. Vladyka Kliment noted that a lot of people had come to the Optina Pustyn Monastery in Vvedenskoye to say goodbye to the deceased.
Then the Chairman of the Publishing Council opened the conference, emphasizing that Christians are called not only to personal morality, but also to active participation in the life of society. Metropolitan Kliment noted that when considering the topic of social justice, it is necessary to start with a person, to remember that God created everyone with certain gifts and a just society is one in which a person can fully realize his talents.
Bishop Gennady of Kaskelen emphasized in his speech that in the secular interpretation, justice and truth are social virtues, and in the Bible, justice and truth are the work of God's Providence.
O.D. Agapov, Professor at Kazan Timiryasov Innovation University, presented the report "Christian ethos as the basis of practices of civil service and social justice".
Priest Stefan Domusci, Head of the Department of Orthodox Doctrine of the Russian Orthodox University of St. John the Theologian, lecturer at the Moscow Theological Academy, in his report reviewed the concept of justice in biblical terminology in the context of righteousness, commandments and judgment.
E.E. Zhukovskaya, adviser to the staff of the Federation Council Committee of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation on Constitutional Legislation and State Building, noted that today some young people have an interest in late Soviet Marxism, and it is necessary to respond to this phenomenon from a Christian perspective.
Priest Alexander Volkov, chairman of the Information Commission at the Diocesan Council of Moscow, stressed that society is interested in the church's interpretation of ideas about justice.
Archpriest Alexander Abramov, Secretary of the Synodal Commission on Bioethics, spoke about his experience working on the creation of the document "On Christian Ethics and Economics.
" A.B. Rudakov, senior Researcher at the D.S. Likhachev Russian Research Institute of Cultural and Natural Heritage, outlined in his report a range of pressing social problems related to the unfair distribution of resources.
Summarizing all the speeches, S.G. Volobuev, Senior Researcher at the Department of Cultural Studies at the D.S. Likhachev Russian Research Institute of Cultural and Natural Heritage, said that there has been a demand for justice in humanity throughout history, noted the importance of the social conquests of the Soviet period and proposed the creation of a textbook of social theology in addition to textbooks on moral and basic theology.
