At a meeting of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, held on March 20, 2025 at the Patriarchal and Synodal Residence in the Danilov Monastery in Moscow, the issue of the situation in the Makhachkala diocese was considered.
The meeting participants decided to establish the Grodno Diocese within the Chechen Republic and the Republic of Ingushetia, separating it from the Makhachkala diocese.
The ruling bishop of the Grozny diocese is given the title "Grozny and Sunzhensky," and the ruling bishop of the Makhachkala diocese is given the title "Makhachkala and Derbent."
Archbishop Theophylact of Pyatigorsk and Cherkessky was entrusted with the temporary management of the Grozny diocese.

But when they pray for me on this day, a personal day, with which the very appearance of a person in life is connected, then, I think, this prayer is heard by the Lord, and help is poured out on the one for whom they pray. And through those present here, I thank all of you now, my dear bishops, fathers, brothers and sisters, who today, all over the face of our earth, in all the fullness of our Church, have been offering up prayers for the Patriarch.
