As a result of shelling by the Armed Forces of Ukraine on August 6, 2024, the Gornalsky Nikolaevsky Belogorsky Monastery, located in the village of Gornal in the Sudzhansky district of the Kursk region, was damaged.
"The monastery cathedral, the main one, was smashed and burned. The fraternal building and the temple building were damaged. <...> In the late afternoon, the Intercession Church was set on fire. <...> Only the walls remain. People, thank God, were not injured," abbot of the monastery Abbot Pitirim (Plaksin) told RIA Novosti.
One person died during the evacuation from the Gornalsky Nikolaevsky Belogorsky monastery.
"A worker of our monastery died during the evacuation. His car was fired at by horsemen," Abbot Pitirim told RIA Novosti.
The monastery is constantly being shelled by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. "The monastery is broken. The monastery cathedral, the second temple, and monastic buildings were destroyed," the vicar said.
The authorities of the region tried several times to organize the removal of monks, but due to the difficult operational situation, it did not work out right away, the brotherhood lost one person. The lack of communication, which does not exist in the entire Kursk border area, prevented the evacuation from the temple, Readovka reports.
