At a meeting of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church on July 25, 2024, a petition was heard from Metropolitan Kirill of Kazan and Tatarstan on the establishment of another diocese in the Tatarstan metropolis.
The meeting participants decided to form the Naberezhnye Chelny diocese within the administrative boundaries of the city of Naberezhnye Chelny, as well as Agryzsky, Yelabuga, Mendeleevsky, Menzelinsky and Tukayevsky districts of the Republic of Tatarstan, separating it from the Kazan diocese.
The ruling bishop of the Naberezhnye Chelny diocese is supposed to have the title "Naberezhnye Chelny and Yelabuga".
The newly formed diocese is included in the Tatarstan Metropolia.
The Right Reverend of Naberezhnye Chelny and Yelabuga should be Abbot Gabriel (Melnikov), a cleric of the Lipetsk diocese. The place of naming and consecration of Abbot Gabriel (Melnikov) as bishop, upon his elevation to the rank of archimandrite, was left to the good will of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia.
