After being dropped from an APU drone on April 24, 2025, the wooden temple complex "New Jerusalem" in the Belgorod region caught fire, it was completely destroyed, the Belgorod diocese told RIA Novosti.
"It wasn't just a Baba Yaga (a type of drone. – editor's note), most likely, there were two of them. One worked as a repeater to amplify the signal, so the second was able to fly so far. But it was a targeted attack, and I think it's safe to say now that the complex has been completely destroyed," the source said.
A spokesman for the Belgorod Diocese, Fyodor Klyuyko, said that rescuers and local residents who helped them were prevented from extinguishing the fire by a Ukrainian drone that attacked people and equipment.
Vyacheslav Gladkov, Governor of the Belgorod region, confirmed the information about the emergency. The head of the region clarified that no one was injured in the fire.
"The Armed Forces of Ukraine have barbarously attacked our beloved New Jerusalem temple complex in the village of Sukharevo, Valuysky district. During the holy Easter week, a blow was deliberately struck at one of the holiest places in the Belgorod region. We clearly understand that these are targeted and planned attacks," Gladkov said.
"I am grateful to everyone who tried to save the shrine: first of all, the staff of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the soldiers of the Orlan unit and the volunteer fire brigade. The fire destroyed the temple complex, but our faith was and remains strong," the governor added.
