The book of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill "Church and School: education + enlightenment = personality"
The publishing house of the Moscow Patriarchate has published a new book by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, "Church and School: education + enlightenment = personality".
"By and large, the Church and secular pedagogy face one task: to educate not only a knowledgeable and efficient person, but also a full-fledged personality who lives meaningfully and spiritually, has a moral dimension of his words and deeds, benefiting not only himself, but also his neighbors, as well as his Fatherland," it says. in the statement of His Holiness. annotations to the publication.
In the book, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill raises the most important issues related to modern education in Russia. The author emphasizes that the cognitive value of learning should be organically combined with the educational function.
The introductory part of the new edition, which is called "School and the value system", says:
"Ideology is a transitory phenomenon. According to scientists, ideology does not last longer than three or four generations, and then dies, even if huge intellectual forces participate in its development, as was the case in the Soviet Union. Whole scientific institutes worked, doctoral dissertations were defended, huge scientific potential was accumulated, but already in the fourth generation everything ended. In the nineties, on the ruins of the Soviet Union, feeling disappointed in everything connected with the past, they began to talk about the fact that there should be no ideology in school. Ideology as a system is not really needed. But it is impossible to raise a child without an idea! A mother puts an idea into a child when she says: "Don't do this! Don't lie! Don't hurt a girl or a boy!" These are very simple instructions that a child absorbs with his mother's milk, through maternal love, but thereby his personality is formed, especially at the age of three to five years. A value system is being formed, outside of which it is impossible to raise a child.
So why don't we want to raise our children in a certain value system? It's not about ideological cliches. Sometimes they say: we need a new ideology. Yes, there is no need for new ideologies! But we must protect our own values, which grow out of our spiritual and cultural tradition. These are the traditions of Orthodoxy and the traditions of Islam for the part of citizens who profess this religion. It is also an ethics related to our faith and our culture. How can we raise our children outside of this system of moral and spiritual coordinates? It won't work! We will get devastated people who are very easy to manipulate. And they will be manipulated by those who are stronger, who have more money, those who control the world's media. A child who grew up outside the value system is unable to distinguish good from evil, because modern postmodern culture imposes a different thesis: objective truths do not exist; your own idea is the absolute truth for you. But if we want to have people who are able to create a family, if we want to have citizens who love their Fatherland, how can we refuse to form a personality in a coordinate system determined by our basic, traditional spiritual, moral and cultural values? A school without an idea is a dangerous phenomenon. And if we create such a school with our own hands (and we almost created it), if we refuse to combine the process of intellectual education with the process of upbringing, we will do something very dangerous for the future of our people and the future of our country. Now is the time to think about our school and demand that the school form not only intellectual baggage (and not fragmentally, but at the proper level), but also personality.
The outstanding Russian historian Vasily Osipovich Klyuchevsky wrote: "By creating the memory of St. Sergius, we are checking ourselves, reviewing our moral stock, bequeathed to us by the great builders of our moral order." The preservation of this order, the transmission to future generations of the associated value system, the formation of people's guidelines and ideals based on the spiritual traditions of our people is the most important task of the national education system. It cannot be solved without the joint efforts of the Church, the state and the whole society."
