On February 4, 2025, a festive liturgy was held at the Cathedral of Bucharest to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Romanian Patriarchate. The service was led by Patriarch Daniel of Romania, with members of the Holy Synod, clergy representatives, and hundreds of believers in attendance, according to basilica.ro.
During the Divine Liturgy, Patriarch Daniel used the archpastoral staff originally gifted to Patriarch Miron (Cristea) by King Ferdinand at his enthronement in 1925. In his address, the Patriarch emphasized the historic significance of the centennial, describing the Romanian Patriarchate as a "guiding light to Christ" and a symbol of unity during times of trial.
“The centennial of the Romanian Patriarchate is an opportunity for a deeper understanding of our Church’s history, which is closely linked to the history of the Romanian people and their aspirations for unity and freedom,” Patriarch Daniel told the faithful.
A highlight of the celebration was the formal proclamation of new Romanian saints. During the liturgy, the Synodal Tomos was read, introducing the icons and hymns of 16 monks and confessors of the 20th century who suffered for their faith under communist persecution.
Following the service, Metropolitan Joseph of Western and Southern Europe led a thanksgiving prayer, after which the Holy Synod and National Church Assembly convened to review the past century’s achievements and outline future plans.
To commemorate the centennial, a special emblem called the “Seal of the Century” was created, and 2025 was officially declared the Year of Remembrance for Romanian New Martyrs and Confessors of the 20th Century.
The main event of the jubilee year will be the grand consecration of the National Cathedral in Bucharest, scheduled for October 26, 2025. This monumental church, whose construction began in 2007, is dedicated to those who perished for faith and freedom. Once completed, the cathedral will stand at 127 meters tall and accommodate 10,000 worshippers.
