A commemorative event marking the 50th anniversary of the modern brotherhood of Xenophontos Monastery on Mount Athos was held at the Alexandra Trianti Hall of the Megaron Athens Concert Hall.

The event, titled “In One Spirit,” was attended by Greek President Konstantinos Tasoulas, Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece, government and parliamentary representatives, members of the Church of Greece and delegates from Mount Athos.

The anniversary commemorated the arrival in October 1976 of 15 monks from the monasteries of Meteora. The group was led by Archimandrite Alexios, who became abbot of Xenophontos that same year. Under the new brotherhood’s leadership, the monastery underwent a period of spiritual renewal and extensive restoration. The monks also helped strengthen liturgical life and preserve traditional crafts, including icon painting and wood carving.

Archimandrite Alexios said the brotherhood’s five-decade journey had included trials, hard work and illness, as well as joy and spiritual achievement. He said the community had been sustained by unity, prayer, ascetic discipline and a commitment to preserving harmony among the monks.

The abbot described the anniversary not as a personal celebration, but as an occasion to give thanks, reflect on the brotherhood’s achievements and glorify God.

President Tasoulas called Mount Athos a spiritual beacon and a guardian of Orthodox and cultural heritage. He said monasticism did not represent withdrawal from humanity or society, but was connected with prayer, service and active love for one’s neighbor.

According to the president, under Archimandrite Alexios, Xenophontos had become a place of prayer, inner reflection, consolation and spiritual support.

Archbishop Ieronymos spoke about the challenges facing contemporary monasticism in an era marked by consumerism and the erosion of moral boundaries. He said monastic life could offer an answer to those challenges, provided it resisted secularization.

Messages from Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis were read during the ceremony. Participants also discussed the history of the brotherhood and its contribution to the life of Mount Athos and Greek society.

The event concluded with a screening of a documentary featuring archival material and previously unpublished photographs.

Xenophontos Monastery is located on the southwestern coast of the Mount Athos peninsula and is dedicated to Saint George the Trophy-Bearer. It was founded in the late 10th century, shortly before 998, by a monk named Xenophon, who became its first abbot.

The monastery received imperial support during the Byzantine period and gradually expanded. It was repeatedly attacked by Latin pirates and Catalans during the 13th and 14th centuries, but was later restored.

Under Ottoman rule, Xenophontos suffered from heavy taxation, the loss of land and a decline in its monastic population. In 1784, it once again became a cenobitic, or communal, monastery. New buildings and a second katholikon dedicated to Saint George were constructed during the 19th century.
