The World Council of Churches (WCC) recently held an online consultation with Christian leaders from the Middle East to address the worsening humanitarian crisis in the region amid escalating conflicts. Participants highlighted the urgent need for international solidarity and called on the global community to support affected civilians, as reported on the WCC's website.

WCC General Secretary Jerry Pillay stressed that during times of crisis, churches are called to be "at the crossroads of suffering and hope," assisting those facing fear, destruction, and loss of loved ones. “Churches must stand with those who are afraid, protect the most vulnerable, and bear witness to the God of life amid destruction,” he emphasized to regional Christian leaders. According to Pillay, the global Christian community stands with them “in solidarity and prayer.”

During the video conference, representatives from Middle Eastern churches shared insights about the current situation, providing assessments of both the political and humanitarian contexts. Particular attention was given to the challenges faced by church communities, including a lack of humanitarian aid, security issues, infrastructure destruction, and an increasing number of displaced persons. Direct testimonies from people living in conflict zones were shared during the meeting.

As a result of the discussions, the World Council of Churches pledged to enhance its efforts in peacebuilding, interfaith dialogue, and humanitarian assistance. Speakers noted that the scale of humanitarian needs has surpassed the capacity of local initiatives, making international support critically important.

The Middle East Council of Churches, representing Orthodox Churches in the region—including the Antiochian, Jerusalem, and Alexandrian Churches as well as ancient Eastern Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant communities—also issued an urgent humanitarian appeal.

The document emphasized that the escalation of conflict has led to numerous civilian casualties, infrastructure destruction, and mass displacement, particularly in Lebanon. The Middle East Council of Churches cited statistics detailing losses and damages in conflict-affected Gulf countries, with Iran being severely impacted, as hundreds of thousands have been forced to flee their homes since the military operations began. The document also mentioned that in Lebanon, at least seventy people have died, and nearly one hundred thousand have lost their homes.

“The primary priority in times of conflict must remain the protection of human life and dignity,” stated the appeal from the Middle East Council of Churches.
