We had reported recently on Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova’s reaction to the President of Ukraine’s stripping of 13 clerics of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) as “Satanism.” Now, in light of attacks by “raiders,”  Ukrainian government forces, upon holy places, churches, and monasteries of the UOC, Ms. Zakharova has denounced such sacrilegious actions as an “anti-religious outrage.”

Condemning the acts, which sadly hearkens back to the worst days of Soviet religious suppression in the 20th century, she said as follows:

"In Ukraine, human rights continue to be grossly violated, and a disdainful attitude towards the feelings of millions of believers is demonstrated. We have already noted that the Kiev regime has taken a course to liquidate the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church in favor of the artificially created schismatic Orthodox Church of Ukraine in 2018, as they call it, and real raider, bandit seizures of the holy places of the UOC are being carried out."

"On Christmas Eve, it became known that (Vladimir) Zelensky by his decree suspended the citizenship of 13 metropolitans and archbishops of the UOC. In the literature of religion, philosophy, and history, this has always been called anti-religious outrage. This is true."

She went on to explain the clergy are under constant pressure from Kiev, and often suffer threats of actual physical aggression.

During 2022 the Zelensky regime organized a large scale persecution of the UOC, accusing it of treasonous ties to Russia. Local authorities would ban the UOC’s activities, and a bill to suppress the church, the canonical Orthodox church, was submitted to the Rada. Some of the clergy have been “sanctioned,” and the security services have started criminal probes against UOC clergy, and have ransacked the homes of bishops and priests, even going so far as the ransacking of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra in search of “anti-Ukrainian activities” which have been as petty as the singing of a song that mentions Russia.

In spite of such persecution, however, Ms. Zakharova believes that the canonical UOC, which still commands the loyalty of the majority of Orthodox believers in Ukraine, will not be able to be destroyed by Kiev.
