Orthodox Christian communities across the Balkans celebrated the feast day of Holy Great Martyr Marina on July 30, honoring one of the most revered saints in the religious traditions of Serbia, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, and neighboring countries.

Festive liturgies, processions, and local celebrations were held at churches dedicated to the saint, drawing large numbers of worshippers who gathered for prayer and traditional observances.

In North Macedonia, the main celebration took place at the Church of the Holy Great Martyr Marina in the village of Zubovce near Gostivar. On the feast day, Archbishop Stefan of Ohrid and Macedonia, together with Metropolitan Joseph of Tetovo and Gostivar, celebrated the blessing of water, blessed festive bread, and took part in celebrations following the Divine Liturgy.

The feast in Zubovce traditionally attracts many residents from the surrounding region. After the service, parishioners participated in a communal meal and cultural program.

In Serbia, the memory of Saint Marina was especially honored at Klisina Monastery, where the festive Divine Liturgy was celebrated by Bishop Sergije of Bihać-Petrovac. In his homily, the bishop highlighted the saint’s steadfastness and her faithfulness to Christ despite severe trials, according to Christian tradition.

Special services were also held in the Serbian village of Bresnica near Vranje and at the Church of the Holy Great Martyr Marina in Kamena Gora near Prijepolje. The faithful took part in worship services, the blessing of festive offerings, and the traditional sharing of slava bread, a custom associated with Orthodox family and community celebrations in the region.

In Albania, celebrations dedicated to Saint Marina were particularly significant for the Orthodox community in the Shpat area near Elbasan. This year marked the first time that a festive Divine Liturgy was celebrated in a newly built church dedicated to the great martyr. The service was led by Metropolitan Anthony of Elbasan, Shpat, and Librazhd.

According to Orthodox tradition, Saint Marina lived in the third century in Antioch and was martyred for her Christian faith after refusing to worship pagan gods. Church tradition holds that she endured severe persecution before being executed at a young age.

Saint Marina is venerated in the Orthodox Church as an example of courage, perseverance, and devotion to Christ. In the folk traditions of Serbia, North Macedonia, and surrounding regions, she is known as “Fiery Mary” and is counted among the so-called “fiery saints” celebrated during the height of summer, together with the Prophet Elijah and Saint Panteleimon.

In popular tradition, her feast day is associated with prayers for protection from natural disasters, fires, and misfortunes. The annual celebrations continue to combine religious devotion with long-standing local customs throughout the Balkans.
