According to chronicle information, around 1423, a miraculous appearance of the image of the Life-Giving Cross of the Lord and the image of the Wonderworker Nicholas of Myra descended from heaven occurred on the Sakhotsky swamp in the Rostov region.
According to an oral tradition recorded at the beginning of the 18th century, the first miracle of God, granted by the revealed Cross, was the foundation of a solid hill in the swamp for the construction of the church of St. Nicholas.
Since then, miracles began to happen in this place: the lame were healed, the blind regained their sight, and the sick recovered. Miracles began to be recorded in a special book. The first such book burned down in a fire that occurred in the temple, but after a while the recording of miracles was resumed. From these subsequent recordings, one can learn about the various healings that took place after prayers before the Life-Giving Cross and anointing with holy oil from the Crucifixion.
After the October Revolution of 1917, a collective farm was established at Nikolsky Pogost, but it did not exist for long. According to the testimony of old-timers, during the years of persecution of the Church, godless activists tried to remove the holy Crucifix from the Holy Cross Church of St. Nicholas Churchyard, "but the Cross seemed to be filled with lead, and they could not move it." Then they tried to saw it, "but the teeth of the saw came across an inexplicably hard material and broke, as if the Cross was carved not from wood, but from stone." In 1940, the Cross was moved by believers from the closed Holy Cross Church (later partially dismantled for household needs, now restored as a monastery of the Life-Giving Cross in the village of Pogost Krest, Ivanovo region) to the church of St. John Chrysostom in the village of Godenovo, present-day Yaroslavl region. In 1997, the Zlatoust Church became a courtyard of the Pereslavl Nikolsky Convent and by 2008 it had been completely renovated.
Nowadays, many pilgrims flock to worship the Cross, especially on June 11, the day of its appearance. There is a large number of recorded contemporary testimonies of healings and other miracles after prayer at the holy Crucifixion revealed in the Sakhot swamp.
