On October 3, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the Venerable Prince Oleg of Bryansk. On the same day, the celebration of the Cathedral of the Bryansk Saints takes place. The life of an ascetic prince is a reminder of man's freedom to follow Christ, leaving wealth, honors, and power for Him.
Saint Oleg, baptised Leontius, came from a princely family that gave the Russian Church many ascetics. His father was Prince Roman of Bryansk, and his grandfather was the holy martyr Mikhail of Chernigov, who died in the Horde for refusing to perform pagan rites. Fidelity to Christ has become the spiritual legacy of this family.
Oleg lived in a difficult era for Russia, when cities and monasteries ravaged by the invasion were gradually being revived. As a prince's son, he was familiar with military labors: the chronicle reports that in 1274 he and his father participated in a campaign against Lithuania. However, monastic service became the main business of his life. After leaving the reign, Oleg took vows with the name Vasily in the Bryansk Petro-Pavlovsky Monastery, founded at his own expense. Here he labored until his death and was buried in the monastery church.
There is little information about the saint's daily life. Church tradition testifies to the severity of his feat, and liturgical hymns glorify his prayer, vigil, and fasting. In the troparion, the monk is told that he loved Christ with all his heart and abandoned his transitory earthly glory. His example teaches us to see the highest value in communion with God, to keep humility and overcome attachment to worldly honors.
The veneration of the monk prince has persisted in the Bryansk land for centuries. During the years of persecution of the 20th century, believers took care of the preservation of his holy relics: in the early 1930s, they were secretly reburied under the altar of the Vvedensky Temple to protect them from desecration. The place of burial remained unknown for a long time. After the testimony of the former elder of the church, Maria Belova, on August 10, 1995, the relics of the monk were rediscovered.
Today they reside in the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Bryansk. Prayers are addressed to the saint for help in trials, protection of warriors and the gift of peace. The prince, who chose the path of monastic humility, is revered as the heavenly intercessor of the Bryansk land.
On his memorial day, we remember that faithfulness to the gospel is manifested in a person's decisions and actions. The life of St. Oleg calls us to seek first of all the Kingdom of God, to grow in prayer and to keep faith in the midst of everyday worries.
