On September 8, the Bulgarian Orthodox Church celebrated the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, honoring Saints Joachim and Anna. On this day, Patriarch Daniel of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church presided over a liturgy at the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin in Sofia's Lagera district, according to the Bulgarian Patriarchate's website. The patriarch was joined by Bishop Pahomius of Branitzi and clergy from the Sofia Metropolis. Parishioners and numerous pilgrims participated in the service, which was followed by a procession through the nearby streets.
In his sermon, Patriarch Daniel emphasized the importance of the holiday and its significance in the Christian faith. He spoke about the joy of the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who fulfilled God's will by becoming the instrument for the incarnation of the Son of God, bringing salvation to the world. The patience, faith, and love of her parents, Joachim and Anna, were held up as examples for all Christians, especially in how they accepted the trials sent to them. The patriarch urged modern families to follow their example by maintaining marital fidelity and trusting in God's providence, even in difficult times.
Patriarch Daniel also spoke about the importance of inner peace, which is difficult to attain in a world full of contradictions and sin. He reminded the faithful that the peace of God should fill the heart of every person, regardless of the trials and challenges they face.
The church's rector, Father Ilian Alexiev, expressed gratitude to the patriarch for his visit and the shared service, emphasizing the importance of patience and faith in overcoming hardships. In conclusion, Patriarch Daniel blessed the congregation and encouraged them to "strive, like Saints Joachim and Anna, to maintain marital fidelity in families, living not for ourselves, but for Christ."
