On June 6, 2026, at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Kaliningrad, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia met with the Governor of the Kaliningrad Region Alexei Besprozvannykh and the Patriarchal Vicar of the Kaliningrad Metropolitanate, Metropolitan Seraphim of the Baltic and Svetlogorsk.
Welcoming the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church, the head of the region noted the special connection of His Holiness the Patriarch with the Kaliningrad region and emphasized his significant contribution to the development of church life in the westernmost region of Russia.
Alexey Besprozvanikh recalled that last year the 40th anniversary of Orthodoxy was celebrated in the region. According to the governor, during this relatively short period of time, a lot of work has been done in the region to build up parish, spiritual, educational and social life.
In his response, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill emphasized the uniqueness of the Kaliningrad Region and the special significance of the changes that have taken place here. The primate recalled that in the mid-1980s, when he first arrived in Kaliningrad to organize church life, many doubted the possibility of its full development.
"But by the grace of God, everything turned out well," His Holiness noted. "Church life in Kaliningrad is at a very high level now."
Patriarch Kirill thanked the leadership of the region for their participation in activities aimed at strengthening spirituality, faith, morality, responsibility to the family and the Fatherland.
The Governor, in turn, expressed gratitude to His Holiness the Patriarch for his contribution to the development of church life in the Kaliningrad region. He also noted the work of the parishes of the Russian Orthodox Church in the field of charity, mercy and assistance to participants of a special military operation returning home. The head of the region addressed separate words of gratitude to Metropolitan Seraphim of Baltiysk and Svetlogorsk.
At the end of the meeting, in connection with the 80th anniversary of the formation of the Kaliningrad Region in 2026, Alexey Besprozvannykh presented His Holiness Patriarch Kirill with a commemorative medal dedicated to this date.
Thanking for the award, the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church emphasized that the Kaliningrad Region occupies a special place in his life and archpastoral ministry.
"Everything related to the Kaliningrad region occupies a special place in my biography, in my life, in my understanding of the responsibility that the Patriarch bears today," His Holiness said.
In 2026, the Kaliningrad Region celebrates its 80th anniversary. The region is the westernmost constituent entity of the Russian Federation and has a special historical, cultural and spiritual significance for the country.
