On the day of the Church New Year, celebrated in the Serbian Church on September 14, His Holiness Patriarch Porfirije of Serbia conducted the Divine Liturgy and a moleben for a blessed beginning to the school year at the Church of Saint Sava in Vračar.

Students, parents, teachers, and educators gathered for the service. Addressing those present, Patriarch Porfirije congratulated the children and students on the start of the new academic year, especially the first-graders. He expressed his hope that this year would be a time for discovering goodness, beauty, and virtue: "The most important task is to learn to be better, to respect one another, and to show compassion. The world is given to us to learn and acquire, and love is to be seen in every moment and in every school. This is what we pray for."

In his sermon following the reading of the Holy Gospel, the Patriarch emphasized that the main theme of a Christian's life is the mystery of the Kingdom of God. "We are all called to be participants in it, but it is up to us to respond to God's call. Many reject His invitation, considering themselves judges and denying the very existence of the Kingdom. May the Lord grant us humility and strength to always follow His call," said the head of the Serbian Church.

The Church New Year (the beginning of the indiction) was established during the era of Saint Emperor Constantine the Great and became part of church life in the 6th century under Justinian I. In Orthodox tradition, it is still celebrated on September 14 according to the new calendar.
