An international symposium titled “God, Homeland, Human Being,” dedicated to the 1,700th anniversary of Christianity being proclaimed the state religion of Georgia, has opened in Tbilisi, according to the Georgian Patriarchate’s press service.

In his welcoming address, Catholicos-Patriarch Shio III of All Georgia highlighted the role of Christianity in shaping the country’s history, culture and national identity.

The patriarch described the adoption of Christianity under King Mirian III and Queen Nana as a defining milestone in Georgia’s history. He also recalled the missionary work of Saint Nino, whom church tradition credits with spreading Christianity in the country during the fourth century.

Shio III said that for centuries, the Christian faith had helped the Georgian people preserve their spiritual and cultural traditions despite numerous challenges. The symposium’s title, he explained, reflects three fundamental values: faith, love of homeland and responsibility toward others.

The patriarch also addressed contemporary challenges, emphasizing that scientific and technological development should serve humanity. He warned that technological progress must not come at the expense of spiritual principles, compassion or moral values.

In his address, the head of the Georgian Orthodox Church also paid tribute to the late Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II, recognizing his contribution to the country’s spiritual revival and the strengthening of church life.

The opening ceremony was attended by the country’s president and prime minister, alongside historians, theologians, cultural figures and representatives of the clergy.

Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze expressed the government’s intention to work closely with the Georgian Orthodox Church to preserve the country’s historical heritage.

President Mikheil Kavelashvili emphasized the importance of traditional values in a society facing globalization and rapid advances in artificial intelligence.

Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili, meanwhile, highlighted the connection between preserving national identity and maintaining the stability of the state.

The symposium brings together religious, academic and public figures to reflect on the historical significance of Christianity in Georgia and its continuing influence on the country’s cultural heritage, national identity and contemporary society.
