A significant spiritual event took place at the location of the volunteer Cossack brigade "Don" (Aksai detachment) in the special military operation zone. Military priests of the Dnepr military unit and group performed the rite of consecration of a field marching church.

The appearance of a temple in a war zone is always a visible sign that warriors are looking for spiritual support. Now the Volunteer Cossacks have a place for communal prayer, participation in the Sacraments, and receiving pastoral consolation in between combat missions.

On the same day, the rank of recruiting new soldiers of the brigade to the Cossacks took place. Taking the oath of allegiance to the Fatherland, the Cossacks and the Orthodox Faith before the cross and the Gospel, the soldiers confirmed their willingness to serve the Motherland not only by force of arms, but also by fortitude.

This is not merely a personal jubilee, but a date of profound significance for the fullness of the Church as a whole, because episcopal consecration is the moment of assuming a special responsibility for the people of God and a witness to the Church’s fidelity to apostolic succession. The calling of the future Primate to episcopal ministry was formally established by a resolution of the Holy Synod in early March 1976; on the eve of the consecration, the rite of nomination took place, and on March 14—on the Sunday of the Triumph of Orthodoxy—at the Holy Trinity Cathedral of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, Archimandrite Kirill (Gundyaev), rector of the Leningrad theological schools, was consecrated Bishop of Vyborg.

By the decision of His Holiness Patriarch Pimen and the Holy Synod of March 3, 1976, Archimandrite Kirill (Gundyaev), rector of the Leningrad Theological Academy and Seminary, was elected Bishop of Vyborg, vicar of the Leningrad Diocese.

Exactly 50 years ago, on March 13, 1976, at the Church of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian at the Leningrad Theological Academy, the rite of nomination took place; and on the following day, March 14, the First Sunday of Great Lent, the Feast of the Triumph of Orthodoxy, during the Divine Liturgy at the Holy Trinity Cathedral of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in Leningrad, the episcopal consecration of Archimandrite Kirill — the future Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus’ — was performed. The service was presided over by the ever-memorable Metropolitan Nikodim (Rotov), whom His Holiness Patriarch Kirill calls his spiritual mentor and teacher.
