On June 18, 2026, a round table on the topic "Archaeological research on the territory of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra: experience of interaction between secular and ecclesiastical specialists" was held at the International Multimedia Press Center "Russia Today" in Moscow.
The archaeological expedition of the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences near Moscow has been carrying out continuous work on the territory of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra since 2004. During this time, archaeologists have discovered tens of thousands of finds that have clarified the circumstances related, in particular, to the siege of Lavra during the Time of Troubles.
During the excavations, it was possible to discover the "tabernacles" mentioned in the "Tales of Avraamiy Palitsyn about the Siege of the Trinity-Sergius Monastery" — more than 20 residential dugouts in the northeastern part of the monastery, as well as a water pipe through which drinking water was supplied to the monastery.
The round table discussion was attended by: Asya Engovatova, Deputy Director of the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Head of the Archaeological Expedition of the Institute of Archaeology near Moscow, Russian Academy of Sciences; Abbot Gerasim (Dyachkov), Economist of the Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra, Deputy Rector for Administrative and Economic Affairs, Professor of the Department of Church History of the Moscow Theological Academy; Junior Researcher at the Center of Archeology and Ethnography of Lugansk State Pedagogical University, head of the archaeological teaching practice in the fields of "History" and "History. Social Studies" by Pyotr Kovalenko.
