On March 18, a solemn ceremony took place at the Rîmec Monastery marking the discovery of the relics of Saint Dometius the Merciful. The divine service was led by Metropolitan Laurențiu of Transylvania and Archbishop Irineu of Alba Iulia, as reported by the Romanian Church’s news portal basilica.ro. Thousands of pilgrims gathered for the service, along with numerous nuns from the monastery where the saint had lived and labored.
Saint Dometius the Merciful was born in 1924 in the Buzău County. In 1949, he took monastic vows under the spiritual guidance of Saint Arsenius (Boca), and from 1959, he dedicated himself to the revival of monastic life at the Rîmec Monastery. He passed away on July 6, 1975, and was buried in the monastery’s cemetery.
Last year, the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church canonized him as a saint. In February of this year, a formal celebration was held at the Patriarchal Cathedral to glorify Saint Dometius. His feast day is now celebrated on July 6.
During the service, Metropolitan Laurențiu emphasized the significance of this event, noting that Saint Dometius is an example of humility and mercy. Archbishop Irineu referred to his life as a heroic endeavor that illuminates the path for the faithful.
The life of Saint Dometius, written by his disciple, Sister Ierusalimia (Gibu), is now available in Russian, according to the website pravoslavie.ru.
