On October 22, 2026, the Ryazan Historical Museum hosted a scientific and practical conference dedicated to the 190th anniversary of the righteous death of St. Herman of Alaska. The meeting was organized by the museum and the Ryazan Diocese. The participants were representatives of the clergy and authorities, historians, public figures and students.
Welcoming the audience, Metropolitan Nicodemus of Ryazan and Mikhailovsky noted the special importance of the saint's memory for the region. As the archpastor recalled, archival documents made it possible to establish that the Monk Herman was born in Kadoma, in the territory of the modern Ryazan region.
"Two centuries of history and thousands of kilometers separating us from the place of Saint Herman's exploits do not detract from the power of his example," His Eminence emphasized. He expressed the hope that the conference would help preserve the memory of the ascetic in the hearts of people.
During the meeting, greetings from church and state figures were heard. The participants were shown a video greeting from Alaska and a documentary about Reverend Herman.
The main program included four thematic reports. Bishop Isaac of Kasimov and Sasovsky spoke about the Sarov and Valaam monasteries associated with the saint's life. Other speeches were devoted to his glorification, the history of Orthodoxy in America and the modern veneration of the ascetic.
The meeting brought together researchers and representatives of the Church who are working to preserve the memory of St. Herman and study his spiritual heritage.
St. Herman of Alaska arrived in Russian America in 1794 as part of the Kodiak ecclesiastical mission. While living on Spruce Island, he preached the Gospel to the Alaska natives, cared for the needy, and protected the underprivileged. In 1970, the ascetic was glorified as a saint.
