Lucillian was a pagan priest under the Roman Emperor Aurelian (270-275). In his old age, he became convinced of the falsity of the pagan religion, wholeheartedly turned to faith in Christ the Savior and was baptized.
Under the influence of his preaching, many pagans began to convert to Christianity. Then the Jews denounced Lukillian to the mayor of Nicomedia, Silvanus, for spreading faith in the crucified Christ. He began to force the elder to return to idolatry. For refusing, Saint Lucillian had his jaws crushed, beaten with sticks and hung upside down, and then imprisoned, where he met four young confessors of Christ – Claudius, Hypatius, Paul and Dionysius.
Saint Lucillian urged them to stand firm for the faith, not to be afraid of torment and death. After a while, they were all brought to the judgment seat and thrown into a red-hot furnace, but suddenly the pouring rain extinguished the flames, and the holy martyrs remained unharmed. The ruler sentenced them to death, sending them to Byzantium for execution. The holy youths were beheaded with a sword, and the holy Martyr Lucillian was nailed to the cross with numerous nails.
The Holy Virgin Paul witnessed the feat of the holy martyrs, who devoted herself to serving those who suffered for their faith in Christ. She delivered food to Christian prisoners, washed their wounds, brought medicines, and buried the bodies of martyrs. After the death of Saint Lucillian and the four youths, she returned to Nicomedia and continued her holy ministry. The Holy Virgin was captured and thrown into a furnace, but by the power of God she remained unharmed. Then she was sent to Byzantium, where the holy martyr was beheaded by a sword.
