The pastoral care of the Christ-loving army is not limited to the war zone. Military priests constantly carry out their ministry in the points of permanent deployment, knowing the immutable law: the spiritual training of a fighter must begin long before he is sent to the front.

For example, in the regimental church of the 247th Guards Airborne Assault Regiment in Stavropol, military priest Priest Maxim Masenko celebrates the Divine Liturgy weekly. The paratroopers regularly gather under the arches of the temple to offer a conciliar prayer, begin the Sacrament of Confession and receive communion of the Holy Mysteries of Christ.

St. Theophan the Recluse described very precisely what happens to a person at the Holy Chalice:
"Frequent communion of the Holy Mysteries of Christ vividly and effectively unites with the Lord... It sanctifies, pacifies, and makes you inaccessible to the dark forces."
It is this inaccessibility to evil and inner peace that make a warrior truly strong. In the temple, the soldier acquires the spiritual core that in the future will allow him to overcome fear, preserve humanity in inhumane conditions and fulfill the supreme commandment of Christ.

This is not merely a personal jubilee, but a date of profound significance for the fullness of the Church as a whole, because episcopal consecration is the moment of assuming a special responsibility for the people of God and a witness to the Church’s fidelity to apostolic succession. The calling of the future Primate to episcopal ministry was formally established by a resolution of the Holy Synod in early March 1976; on the eve of the consecration, the rite of nomination took place, and on March 14—on the Sunday of the Triumph of Orthodoxy—at the Holy Trinity Cathedral of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, Archimandrite Kirill (Gundyaev), rector of the Leningrad theological schools, was consecrated Bishop of Vyborg.

Exactly 50 years ago, on March 13, 1976, at the Church of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian at the Leningrad Theological Academy, the rite of nomination took place; and on the following day, March 14, the First Sunday of Great Lent, the Feast of the Triumph of Orthodoxy, during the Divine Liturgy at the Holy Trinity Cathedral of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in Leningrad, the episcopal consecration of Archimandrite Kirill — the future Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus’ — was performed. The service was presided over by the ever-memorable Metropolitan Nikodim (Rotov), whom His Holiness Patriarch Kirill calls his spiritual mentor and teacher.
