Serbian Patriarch Porfirije marked Vidovdan, one of Serbia's most significant historical and religious commemorations, by calling on believers to view the occasion not merely as a remembrance of the past but as a daily moral choice between earthly and eternal values.

The head of the Serbian Orthodox Church celebrated the feast-day Divine Liturgy at the medieval Ravanica Monastery, one of the Church's most important shrines. Founded in the late 14th century by Prince Lazar Hrebeljanović, the monastery houses the relics of the Serbian ruler who was killed after the Battle of Kosovo in 1389.

Clergy from several dioceses attended the service. Following the liturgy, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić visited the monastery together with government ministers and other public officials, according to the Serbian Orthodox Church.

In his homily, Patriarch Porfirije stressed that Vidovdan should not be understood solely as a historical anniversary or a national symbol.

"Every generation has its own Kosovo, and every person has his or her own choice between the transient and the eternal, between selfishness and love, between fear and trust in God," the patriarch said.

He described Prince Lazar's death not as a defeat but as a testimony of faith, saying the medieval ruler "chose not death, but eternal life" by remaining faithful to Christianity.

According to the patriarch, the Church understands the Kosovo Covenant primarily through the Gospel, seeing it as a call to spiritual commitment rather than simply the remembrance of a historical battle.

Prince Lazar led a coalition of Serbian and Bosnian rulers against the forces of the Ottoman Empire at the Battle of Kosovo on June 28, 1389. Both Ottoman Sultan Murad I and Prince Lazar were killed during the conflict, with Lazar captured and executed after the battle.

Although the battle ended without a decisive military victor, the heavy losses suffered by the Serbian principalities weakened their resistance, and much of the Balkans eventually came under Ottoman rule for nearly five centuries.

Following his death, Lazar was canonized as a martyr by the Serbian Orthodox Church. Over time, a central legend of Serbian history developed around his supposed choice between an "earthly kingdom" and the "Kingdom of Heaven." According to later tradition, Prince Lazar was offered a choice between military victory and eternal salvation before the battle and chose the spiritual path.

This tradition became the foundation of the Kosovo Covenant, one of the defining elements of Serbian historical memory and national culture. While the Serbian Orthodox Church interprets it primarily as fidelity to Christian values, it also remains one of the most enduring symbols of Serbian national identity.

Built shortly before the Battle of Kosovo by Prince Lazar himself, Ravanica Monastery became a major center of pilgrimage, spiritual life and Serbian literary culture after his relics were transferred there. Despite repeated destruction during the Ottoman wars, the monastery was rebuilt each time and remains one of Serbia's most important medieval monuments and a traditional site for Vidovdan commemorations.
