Thirty-five servicemen began the Sacraments of Confession and Communion at the location of the 3rd infantry battalion "BARS Kursk". Military priest Valery Kirsanov met with the military personnel at the frontline positions of the Kursk region.

The priest revealed to the soldiers the essence of the evangelical faith, the meaning of the church's Sacraments, and reminded them of the spiritual traditions on which the resilience of our army has been built for centuries.

The BARS units (the country's Combat Army Reserve) are formed from volunteers. These people made their own choice — to stand up for their native land. Their step towards God is becoming just as conscious today. By accepting the Holy Mysteries in conditions of constant danger, a warrior gains not only absolution, but also that inner spiritual clarity that makes him unshakeable in any battle.

This is not merely a personal jubilee, but a date of profound significance for the fullness of the Church as a whole, because episcopal consecration is the moment of assuming a special responsibility for the people of God and a witness to the Church’s fidelity to apostolic succession. The calling of the future Primate to episcopal ministry was formally established by a resolution of the Holy Synod in early March 1976; on the eve of the consecration, the rite of nomination took place, and on March 14—on the Sunday of the Triumph of Orthodoxy—at the Holy Trinity Cathedral of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, Archimandrite Kirill (Gundyaev), rector of the Leningrad theological schools, was consecrated Bishop of Vyborg.

Exactly 50 years ago, on March 13, 1976, at the Church of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian at the Leningrad Theological Academy, the rite of nomination took place; and on the following day, March 14, the First Sunday of Great Lent, the Feast of the Triumph of Orthodoxy, during the Divine Liturgy at the Holy Trinity Cathedral of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in Leningrad, the episcopal consecration of Archimandrite Kirill — the future Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus’ — was performed. The service was presided over by the ever-memorable Metropolitan Nikodim (Rotov), whom His Holiness Patriarch Kirill calls his spiritual mentor and teacher.
