On August 30, 2025, a solemn Divine Liturgy was held at the Monastery of Saints Michael and Gabriel—Miholjska Prevlaka—marking the establishment of a new monastic brotherhood and the founding of a monastic community in Dragal. The liturgy was led by Archbishop Joanikije of Cetinje, Metropolitan of Montenegro and the Littoral, alongside the clergy of the metropolitanate.
The new abbot of Prevlaka Monastery is Hieromonk Vasily, who previously served as a novice at Podmaine Monastery. Archimandrite Benedict has been appointed to lead the new monastic family in Dragal.
Following the reading of the Gospel, Hieromonk Raphael, the abbot of Podmaine Monastery, addressed the congregation, emphasizing the importance of spiritual insight and the recognition of one's sinfulness: "Only those who see themselves as sick with sin in the light of Divine grace can grasp salvation in Christ." He noted that true discipleship requires constant spiritual effort and attentiveness to the mystery of salvation.
Metropolitan Joanikije congratulated the brotherhood on this significant event, highlighting that the creation of a new monastery is a serious endeavor that demands effort and dedication: "The needs of the Church dictate the constant improvement of its life, and we must invest all our strength into this." He particularly acknowledged the contributions of Archimandrite Benedict, who continues the work of his spiritual mentor, Father Savva the Schema Monk, known as a great builder and restorer of monasteries.
"Life has returned to Dragal, which had been abandoned," said the metropolitan, listing the achievements of Father Benedict: the restoration of the monastery, the establishment of two churches, a school, a monastic sisterhood, a winery, and support for the faithful residing in the area.
The metropolitan also expressed gratitude to Father Raphael and the brotherhood of Podmaine for sending the new brotherhood led by Father Vasily to the new monastery. "Father Vasily takes on a much greater responsibility than honor, and he will need much mercy and grace from God, while we all must support him and his brotherhood," the archpastor emphasized.
Miholjska Prevlaka is an ancient monastery with a rich history. The earliest records of the church on Miholjska Prevlaka Island date back to the 4th and 5th centuries, when, according to tradition, the Apostle Paul preached there. Over time, the monastery has been repeatedly destroyed and restored. In the 14th and 15th centuries, it suffered from Venetian expansion, and according to tradition, 72 monks were poisoned in the 15th century. The modern monastery has been actively functioning since the early 2000s, with ongoing archaeological research and restoration work.
