On August 13, the exhibition "August — the month of the Three Saviours" opened in the museum "Gosudaryovaya Doroga" on the territory of the Zavidovo village temple ensemble. Exhibits from the storerooms of the museum "Folk Crafts" are presented in each exposition by epoch.
Pupils of the summer Sunday school of the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Zavidovo village, led by the rector, Archpriest Peter Dubyago, took part in the design of the exhibition.
Archpriest Peter Dubyago told the audience about the church holidays in August, the Three Saviours, as they are popularly called.
On August 14, the Church celebrates the Origin (wearing out) of the precious trees of the Life-giving Cross of the Lord. We remember the One by whose power the instrument of execution became the tree of life for the believer. The origin of this holiday is connected with the tradition, which in the 9th century was established in Constantinople in connection with the spread of deadly epidemics in the midst of the heat – to carry in early August a part of the Life-Giving Cross from the house church of the Greek emperors to the temple of St. Sophia. Priests consecrated the water, believers went out in processions to the streets and roads, and many sick people were healed.
The holiday is popularly called "Honey Savior", since by this time the honey of the new harvest ripens, which is customary to bring to the temple. Previously, honey could only be eaten from that day on. Honey was used to make drinks, gingerbread, and other baked goods. Honey dishes were prepared for the Honey Feast: pies, pies, rolls, cakes with honey and poppy seeds.
The Day of the Transfiguration of the Lord, August 19, is often called the "Apple Savior." The service recalls the gospel event: Jesus Christ revealed His heavenly glory to the three apostles Peter, James and John on Mount Tabor during prayer. His clothes and face shone with an uncreated light, transformed. The Lord made a wonderful revelation of His Glory to strengthen the disciples' spirit and faith on the eve of the coming trials.
On this day, the gardeners brought apples to the temple for consecration, and then they were distributed to all parishioners.
The feast in honor of the transfer of the Uncreated Image of Jesus Christ from Edessa to Constantinople is called the “Nut Savior.” It is celebrated on August 29.
From that day on, the nut harvest began. The day before, bread and rolls made from new harvest flour were baked in order to consecrate fresh pastries in the church in the morning. It also became a grain market because the harvest was just coming to an end.
The practice of consecrating the fruits of the new harvest originates from the custom of offering to God, as the Lord of Heaven and earth, the firstfruits of fruits and livestock. The "Saviours" have always been and remain loved by the people, because church traditions and folk customs are intertwined in them.
