The Jerusalem Patriarchate has strongly condemned a terrorist attack in Jordan’s capital, Amman, that killed a security officer and wounded another, warning that terrorism poses a serious threat to the country’s national unity and stability.
According to the Orthodoxia News Agency, citing the Diocese of the Jerusalem Church in Jordan, the knife attack took place near the Sri Lankan Embassy. The victim was Corporal Jawad Ali Khalaf Al-Salayta, a member of Jordan’s Public Security Directorate who was on duty at the time of the incident. Another law enforcement officer was injured.
Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem and Archbishop Christophoros of Jordan expressed their condolences to King Abdullah II, the family of the deceased officer and the Jordanian people.
In their statement, the church leaders also recalled a recent attack on the Greek Orthodox Church of Saint George in Hamoudeh. They said the latest acts of violence demonstrate that terrorism is directed against Jordan as a whole, threatening its national unity and longstanding traditions of peaceful coexistence.
"The blood of the Christian and Muslim victims, as well as members of the security forces, testifies to the unity of the country: its people share their grief and sacrifices, standing together against terrorism and extremism," the Patriarchate said.
The church representatives stressed that such crimes would not succeed in creating divisions among Jordanian communities. Instead, they said, the attacks would strengthen the country's determination to safeguard peace, security and social cohesion.
The investigation into the attack has been launched by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Jordan's State Security Court.
Jordan's Ministry of Awqaf, Islamic Affairs and Holy Places also condemned the incident, describing it as a crime targeting non-Muslims.
The statements from both Christian and Muslim religious authorities underscore a united rejection of extremism and a commitment to preserving Jordan's tradition of religious coexistence.
