A soldier who bowed his head in confession before a priest under the banner of the Savior Not Made with Hands. The concentrated faces of the soldiers gathered for a prayer service at the front tent. There is nothing random about these plots. Behind them — the experiences, the things seen, passed through the heart. These are not just images of everyday military life, but reflections on faith, the human soul and turning to God in the face of mortal danger.
At the exhibition "Christian Tradition. Our Days", which opened on November 4 at the Moscow Manege on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, the theme of a special military operation occupies a special place. Among more than five hundred works of modern church art, there are works in which the events of today are interpreted through the spiritual experience of a person.
These subjects are reflected in the works of the masters of the Studio of Military Artists named after M.B. Grekov. Vasily Kuraksa's painting "Prayer" and Egor Smirnov's charcoal work "Confession" address the most intimate — the inner world of a person caught in the circumstances of war.
The artists show things that cannot be conveyed in the dry language of a military chronicle: moments of spiritual concentration, the need for repentance, and hope for God's help. In the midst of anxiety, danger and uncertainty, a person seeks support in faith, and prayer becomes a source of courage and spiritual strength for him.
It is noteworthy that these works are presented in the same space with icons, mosaics, works of temple art and works dedicated to the centuries-old history of Orthodoxy. This neighborhood reminds us that the Christian tradition does not belong exclusively to the past. She continues to live, finding her expression in the events, experiences and artistic images of modern times.
The thousand—year-old Christian tradition of Russia today is embodied not only in the gold of icons and the grandeur of temples, but also in simple, poignant subjects - in prayer before battle, in quiet confession, in the human desire to preserve faith and hope even in the most difficult circumstances.
The exhibition "The Christian Tradition. Our Days" is held at the Central Exhibition Hall "Manege" in Moscow until December 8, 2026. Admission is free.
